Jennifer 1st: Film

The film “Stop Loss” is about the Iraq War. The term, “stop loss,” refers to the policy that states, when U.S. army lacks back-up soldiers, they can always bring back the soldiers who already finished their military service period, at any time. The main character fights at the Iraq War, losing many of his comrades, and is discharged from the army to come back home. However, due to shortage of soldiers, he is called to rejoin the army. He speaks up to go against the “stop loss”. This movie talks against the government of America and President Bush. The main character of the movie says, “I’ve done enough for the country”. The director of the movie heard of “stop loss” when his step brother volunteered to join the army in age of 18. He thought of stop loss the most unfair and unjust policy. He drew the picture of the U.S. government as a group of heinous and atrocious people gathered together. Even “New York Post,” the paper that is pro-Bush, could not talk bad of the movie “Stop Loss” and hoped the best luck for the soldiers who were forced to go back to the battlefield.
Many people heard about stop loss for the first time as they watched this movie. The director’s purpose of revealing the unfair policy called stop loss was successfully done. Many people who watched the movie unintentionally believed there was something wrong with the government. The message against Bush affected the people’s thinking greatly through the story plot. One usually feels sympathy for the main character. A few actually changed their opinion about the policy after watching the movie. The movie had a great influence on people’s speculation.
