Step3: Music

Music is defined as an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. Dictionary.com LLA, 2008, <http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/music>. In the context of mass media, we can focus on the part “expresses ideas and emotions”. There are many different types of music; classical, pop, rock, cultural music. Different types of music may be directed towards a specific group of people, such as pop songs, that are often heard by teenagers. Nevertheless music itself is for a vast range of audience of all cultures, ages and genders. Music can convey ideas or declare something through the texts in their lyrics, but mostly it is through the notes and melody lines. Consequently music affects and moves people by emotion and feelings over logic and reasoning. First of all people get into contact with the music either by chance or intention. They listen to the music (both the melodies and lyrics), and determine whether it is something they are attracted to or not. Then the people separate into two different groups; those who are not very interested move on to something else and forget about the music; those who are interested listen with more attention and are moved by the music to a certain degree, changing their opinions and mindset, and maybe even getting further into analyzing deeper meanings that the music may hold inside.
